@Tj4den – Hi, E71 and N900 are both different types of phones! So maybe a comparison between them is not appropriate. N900 is more like a mini tablet (it’s like a computer and has the Maemo, Linux operating system). There are lots of things you can do with an N900 and not with E71. But now if you want to purchase an E71, I would recommend you to purchase the Nokia E72; E72 is a better phone than E71 and has better processing power and some additional more usable features. You call :)

Thanks for the vid. Informative comments too. I was initially going to go with an n900, but I think I’ll get the e71 first. Besides it has Gravity. :)

Actually it all depends on how updated your maps are. By far Google’s has the technology advantage so I can only guess that Google’s maps would be better. But Nokia Maps also did a great job for me. So it all drills down to the fact – “where are you”, “how good is the satellite reception”. GPS perfection can only be achieved by latest technology receiver devices and smart phones are not the best devices for 100% accurate GPS pointing.

hey thanks for the great answers. one last question — do you find Google or Nokia maps more accurate in GPS tracking? I have read numerous reports that said Nokia maps were off by “a couple of blocks”.

(2) You do have voice command feature in E71, but it does not do what you requested. One of my friend mentioned that this option is present in Google-Nexus-One phone (but with T-Mobile’s poor 3G network it may not be of great use).

** IF GPS is the most important determinant factor in buying a smart phone then do buy a phone which does not need to download map-data every time you need directions. Otherwise it is going to be a pain when you are traveling and if the data network is bad.

Very interesting question!!

(1) Yes you do have the option to select from Contacts. BUT this option is Available in NOKIA MAPS. Steps: Run NOKIA Maps on your phone: MENU->GPS->Maps. Select Options->Search. Then Select “Addresses” and then Select OPTIONS->”Select From Contacts”. I tried using Google-Maps on E71 but it did not give me option to Select from Contacts. But interestingly in my friend’s iPhone, Google Maps does have option to select from Contacts!

i meant… (1) can you click on an address entry in the contact list and have the option to go to the maps for driving directions? (unlike the stand-alone GPS units where you have to enter each address by hand from the maps).
(2) i want to be able to say a name in the contact list (or any name in the POI database) and the voice command will fetch driving directions from the maps.
GPS is the most important determinant factor in which smart phone I will purchase. Thanks for answering.

(1) I have not used Garmin iQue PDA, but yes you can switch between any application on Nokia E71 (just press the home screen for 2-3 seconds and you will get the option to switch between open windows/applications)

(2) You can definitely use voice commands on Nokia E71 for other phone functions; but I haven’t tried that to search GPS… (didn’t quite understand your question)

(3) You can save waypoints on both Nokia and Google Maps.

I think Nokia now offers A-GPS free of charge. I have a few questions — (1) can you jump directly to GPS from the contact list like on the old Garmin iQue PDA? (2) can you use voice command to search GPS or call up other phone functions? (3) can you save waypoints on the Nokia or Google maps?

You only pay for the internet usage. And good if you have unlimited internet. In US AT&T generally charges $15 a month for unlimited internet on cellphone.

Ofcourse you can do that once you connect your phone to an available WiFi network access point.

Nokia E71 does have GPS! Do you have internet on your cellphone? Yes? Is it provided by your cellphone network? Yes? Is it fast enough? Yes? When you drive in your car, does the internet network follow you? I mean is it available wherever you are going? Yes? Then I assume there should not be any problem. But yes, do check your access point settings. In USA with AT&T as network, the access point name is generally “AT&T Internet”. If you run google maps and set it to use GPS things should be fine.

1. GPS is in built feature of Nokia, so no charge.

2. Internet (3G) is required to download maps for Google Maps. You get it from your phone service provider generally as a “data plan” or a “web browsing plan”. In the USA this internet plan can cost you from $10 (T-Mobile), $15 (AT&T) upto $40 depending upon the plan you chose.

*Note I am not using Nokia’s A-GPS plan. It’s just the phone’s GPS device and Google Maps.

Yes A-GPS ( Assisted-GPS), is a service that you can purchase from Nokia after their trial version of A-GPS ends. A-GPS provides turn by turn directions (voice guided) and is a trial version with a New Nokia E71 phone.. After the trial ends, it does ask you to purchase it.

1. GPS is built-in feature of Phone.
2. But remember that you will need updated maps and for that you can use Google Maps (and this requires a live internet connection like AT&T 3G connection).
3. The way it works is like this: a) GPS device in the phone connects with the satellites to download the coordinates of your current position. b) These coordinates are used by Google Maps to actually point them on the map. And these maps are dynamically downloaded from internet.

Got it?
