Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore has announced details of the upcoming Live Earth concerts and called for urgent action to combat global warming. Live Earth is a 24-hour, seven continent music festival designed to raise awareness of solutions for climate change and will be staged in New York, London, Johannesburg, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney and Hamburg on July 7, 2007.
Performers include The Police, Genesis, Bon Jovi and Madonna. The concert series was founded by Emmy-winning producer Kevin Wall and is run in partnership with the Alliance for Climate Protection, of which Gore is chairman. At a June 28 New York City press conference, Gore, Wall and Alliance for Climate Protection CEO Cathy Zoi issued a “call to action,†a series of environmental commitments that Live Earth is asking of people across the globe. Gore and Wall also announced more than 6,000 satellite Live Earth events will be held in 109 countries alongside the concerts. Additional broadcast events will take place in Kyoto, Japan and Antarctica.
